India’s renewable energy push is gaining strong momentum, with over 16.78 lakh households already benefiting from rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY). The government has disbursed ₹9,280.88 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to these beneficiaries, according to details shared in Parliament.
Launched in February 2024 by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), the scheme has an ambitious target—to bring clean, cost-free solar electricity to one crore households in the residential sector by 2026–27. The initiative not only reduces electricity bills but also promotes sustainable energy adoption across the nation.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy & Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, informed the Rajya Sabha that the large-scale response reflects growing public trust in rooftop solar as a reliable and eco-friendly energy source.
The programme builds on earlier efforts, notably the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase-II, which began in March 2019 and was originally extended to March 2026. With the rollout of PMSG: MBY, this earlier programme has now been fully integrated into the new flagship scheme, streamlining implementation and expanding its reach.
By 2027, the government envisions a solar-powered transformation in millions of Indian homes, reducing dependency on conventional energy sources, cutting carbon emissions, and empowering households with true energy independence
