U.S. freezes immigrant visa processing for 75 countries. India stays off the list.

The United States has announced a sweeping freeze on immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, signalling a sharper turn in its immigration policy. Effective January 21, US embassies and consulates will indefinitely pause immigrant visa appointments for these nations while Washington reviews its screening and vetting systems.

The decision has drawn immediate attention in South Asia. Pakistan and Bangladesh are included in the suspension list. India is not.

For Indian applicants and businesses that rely on cross-border mobility, this exclusion matters. Officials familiar with the process view India’s omission as a reflection of sustained US confidence in India’s documentation standards, background verification systems, and information-sharing mechanisms. In practical terms, immigrant visa processing for Indian nationals continues as usual.

According to the US State Department, the freeze applies to countries whose migrants are assessed to be accessing American welfare systems at what it describes as “unacceptable rates.” The pause will remain in force until the US government is satisfied that new immigrants will not place additional fiscal strain on public resources. The administration has framed the move within its broader “America First” approach.

For global leaders and business decision-makers, the implications are clear. Immigration policy is increasingly being tied to economic impact, data credibility, and state capacity. Countries perceived as having strong governance and verifiable systems retain access. Others face abrupt barriers, with direct consequences for talent mobility, diaspora-led investment, and bilateral economic ties.

Countries affected by the immigrant visa processing freeze include:
Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bhutan, Bosnia, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Republic of the Congo, Russia, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.

As the US reassesses its immigration filters, the broader message is unmistakable. In a fragmented global order, mobility is no longer just about demand for opportunity. It is increasingly about trust, data integrity, and perceived economic responsibility.
