Passport Power in 2026: A Wider Global Mobility Gap Emerges

Imagine holding a ticket to the world—or being stuck at home. The Henley Passport Index 2026 reveals a shocking truth: global travel is exploding, but not everyone can join the ride. Singapore tops the list with visa-free access to 192 countries, while Afghanistan lags at just 24—a massive gap of 168 destinations, up from 118 in 2006. Your passport now shapes your life more than ever.

Based on IATA data, Asia leads with Japan and South Korea at 188 destinations each. Europe dominates too, with Denmark, Sweden, and others close behind. But winners and losers stand out: UAE soared 57 spots since 2006 through smart diplomacy, hitting 5th place. Eastern Europe climbers like Albania and Ukraine gained big via partnerships. China jumped 28 places in a decade. Meanwhile, Bolivia lost ground, and the US (now 10th) and UK (7th) slid from top ranks due to shifting alliances.

Travel hits 5.2 billion passengers this year, yet borders tighten. IATA’s Willie Walsh warns money alone won’t cut it—tech like digital IDs could help if used right. The US eyes harsh data demands on allies, potentially killing visa-free trips. EU visa rejections hit Africans hard, widening inequality.

China bucks the trend, opening to 77 nationalities for soft power gains. As borders harden, second passports boom—demand from India, US, and others surges for security.

Passport power isn’t just travel perks; it’s opportunity in a divided world. Plan wisely.
