Singh’s early years define the ways in which he laid a robust foundation for his later entrepreneurial triumphs. He completed his Aeronautical Engineering studies in the UK with flying colours. No wonder he was selected by the British Officers Services Selection Board in the UK for the Indian Army and later commissioned as an officer in a well-known cavalry regiment. He joined American Universal Electric Company in 1960, and soon after its merger with DLF Universal Limited in 1979, he took over as the Managing Director.

No wonder he has been credited with launching India’s first large scale residential colonies in Delhi. He is the one to master the concept of integrated townships and business districts like DLF Cyber City in Gurugram. His decision to focus on Gurugram in the 1970s was met with raised eyebrows and astonishments. However, undeterred by his spirit, he has successfully turned Gurugram from a relatively unknown suburb to a real estate hotspot of India. Today, Gurugram’s architecture comprises a mix of modern high-rise buildings, luxury apartments, and commercial complexes, reflecting the city’s rapid urban development and its “Millennium City” status. Many of its new buildings have incorporated green design principles like energy efficiency, rainwater harvesting, and green spaces.

Under his leadership, DLF emerged as the first real estate company in India to launch an IPO in 2007, which at the time was one of the country’s largest.
